Philips Hue gen 1 App Reviews

Better than the "gen 2" Version

This app has a number of limitations. However, its far more flexible than the "gen 2" version. Whoever, at Philips, decided the "gen 2" version should be released should be fired.

Scenes work great

While the user interface might be dated at least this app allowed you to easily customize your light colors. The scenes work great and let me set up the lights however I wanted to very easily.

DISGRACEFUL and LAZY

Edit: I swear to god if you charge us for the new app youre going to be sorry. The developers on this app should be fired. This is the most embarrassing, frustrating, counter-intuitive and even harmful app. Its obvious that the geniuses that created this app have never used it before. Creating a scene using a picture is so unhelpful its as though the Philips team is teasing me. You cant create scenes from scratch, when you try all of your lights come on in completely random colors which you have to correct before you can start. And because youre stuck with this HORRIBLE and INFURIATING application if you want HomeKit integration (the ability to use Siri to control your lights - but only 12 of them) you are forced to put up with it. No updates and they ignore emails and feedback. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND WAITING TO PURCHASE HUE LIGHTS AND GO WITH THEIR COMPETITION which will undoubtedly force Philips to replace this piece of body waste.

Latest Update

Was never a great app, but.... New update, new problem. Disconnected itself from hub. Now, finds hub, cant link to hub. Third-party apps do fine. Sad that a company whose products I generally enjoy cant produce an app.

Looks the same to me.. I see no new UI

Read reviews on iMore and others. They talk about a new UI. All I see is the an unintuitive kid-like programmed UI. There was a slight logo change from color to a desaturated one. But thats it. (Sigh)

Update of App messed up my house lights

My scenes are all disorganized. Lights come on and off randomly associated with scenes that they are not on. The system was working great before the app changed. I will be purchasing another system now. Hue is terrible!

Still the hue app I use most

Pro: with a little care to design scene photos, the widgets can be really useful. I like that they allow to turn off the lights in a scene too. I mostly use it to set up scenes and control them by widget. I also use location trigger to turn on porch light when I come home after dark, as in that one place it allows for a conditional trigger, which I cant get with ifttt. Cons: bad for any kind of automation. No rooms or zones, no triggers, very limited alarms and timers. Scenes cant leave some settings of affected lights as is - eg leave brightness and change only color or vice versa. Control of switches is much better in iconnect hue. Ge link bulbs show in siri menu but dont work with Siri. I would not care if hue had outdoor bulbs. Other HomeKit devices cant be controlled. The list is endless.

Suggestion

Hey. I love the app, but I have a suggestion (not a problem). I am a iPhone 6s user, and I think it would be awesome if you could toggle lights on and off from a 3D touch quick access menu. Thanks!

Zero Stars

This app is the worst. Still doesnt properly turn off or on lights and I cant remotely access my lights anymore. Bulky functionality. Come on Philips youre a leader in the Smart Light market... so LEAD!

get ilumis

the technology is aggravating. connecting additional bulbs is impossible. You can’t manually or automatically connect them, there are no directions or help online and the headaches aren’t worth the trouble. I’m returning these for ilumi bluetooth bulbs. much cleaner and simpler.

Love my Phillips Hue

iPad app needs to be updated to support iPad Pro natively. Otherwise, works very well controlling my lights.

Groups, saturation, support for white lights.

Love all the hue products. Have several bulbs, lightstrip and bloom. Problem is this app lacks some basic functionality that Im forced to go to third party apps to be able to access, and their implementation is often lacking. First of all, why am I able to adjust the saturation on my bulbs in other apps but not on the Hue app? This is a crucial control to getting colors just right. Add it for gods sake. Second, I have bulbs in several rooms of the house. I should be able to designate groups and add individual bulbs, so if I want to increase the brightness in my bedroom I can do so with one slider. Also, I have to create scenes to turn off a whole room, but just that room. Seriously? Why is there no functionality for setting up rooms or groups? Third, bought some of the new white lights for the dining room, but the only way I can control them with this app is in the lights tab. Evidently its too much to ask to be able to set up recipes, or group these lights with color bulbs used for accents in the same room to make a unified theme that can be activated like other scenes. Instead I have to futz around setting each bulbs level. Support the products you sell with a decent app that gives your customers all the options. This app should be the ultimate hue app, not the basic one.

Geofencing!!

It used to work before the last update. It was nice to come home and see the lights already turned on. But ever since the last update it never works. PLEASE FIX IT!!

Lacks essential functionalities

Amazing products with such a disappointing app. Cant even create and control groups

So-so

The idea is really cool but I really think that theres no need in changing the lampss colour. I think that the colour should be constant.

Works really well with white lights

I just have a couple of the white Hue lights, and the app does everything I need pretty well. The alarm feature with controllable fade in is nice. It was super easy to set up with the bridge.

Keeps getting worse

Once upon a time I thought this app performed decent. I even went so far as to purchase the new bridge for Siri features. Now it just works terrible. Cannot even recognize the bridge and phone are on the same network. Theres also no support from Philips for this. Shame on you Philips. Shame.

Light stripes

For me my light stripes brings life in my apartment at night. The different colors are amazing!!!!! Good job Philips ;)

The app is very basic and disappointing

I bought four go lights and the starter 3 bulb kit this past Christmas for our house. The products for the most part are good but I was sold on the features that are supposed to be easy to use. First, the hue app is very basic. The features advertised that you expect with hue are generally achieved by buying 3rd party apps. Second, things like "Siri turn on bedroom lights" are often replied with I dont know what you mean. Ive found to group and name lights, you must use 3rd party apps. At this price range, one needs to develop a much more robust app and come out with more updates. Philips, if you do not, another company will take your market share away.

Life Changing Product!

I bought my first two hue light bulbs that came with a bridge about a year ago just to try the system out in my bedroom. I liked that it was compatible with Sleep Cycle which I use every night to get to bed and the lights work with the alarm to wake up in the morning! Its really cool. As of right now Ive converted my whole entire apartment to the hue system. I have lots of strips, many color bulbs, a bloom, as well as regular white bulbs in every room. I like how I can change the colors of the individual lights to decorate a room and create scenes to save the different color variations ive made. I like the different third party apps for hue light products too. Its perfect for setting the mood for any type of event or just for relaxing at home. These lights have honestly changed my life and Im so glad the Ive invested the hundreds of dollars on this product. It is an expensive system but if you have the cash or if you build up the system over time its worth it. Give it a try I promise you wont regret doing it. Its absolutely amazing!
